New York Unites!
Updated: November 12, 2008
All across the state, community groups and agencies are working together to improve transportation for people with disabilities within New York. We're going to be adding links on this page to any group, coalition or organization (involved in transportation improvement for the disabled community) in the STATE that sends us information and URL. That way, we can keep you informed on what's going on about transportation improvement all over the State. All I need is a email with the information. The best news I can give you is that we're all talking, comparing notes... what works and what doesn't, combining our efforts, researching and seeing what's needed all over the state, from city transit fixed-route systems and paratransit to upstate rural areas. The Volunteer Center The Volunteer Center provides (rural) transportation through volunteer drivers to Jefferson County residents in critical need to medical services, grocery shopping, family visits, etc. They are working towards expanding to become a Mobility Management Office. For more info contact the center at: 227 Sherman Street, Second Floor; Watertown, NY 13601 The Center can be reached by phone at : (315) 788-0422 voice, (315) 788-8021 fax

Disabled in Action Disabled in Action (DIA) is a civil rights organization committed to ending discrimination against people with disabilities — all disabilities. We fight to eliminate the barriers that prevent us from enjoying full equality in American society. Founded in 1970, DIA is a democratic, not-for-profit, tax-exempt, membership organization. DIA consists primarily of and is directed by disabled people. We believe in the motto, "Nothing about us without us!" What Are DIA's Objectives?
For more information, please visit the Disabled in Action Webpage. Disabled Rider's Coalition NYC - The Coalition attends MTA Board and Committee meetings and testifies on issues pertaining to individuals with disabilities. We meet with advocates, transit officials and politicians to lobby for greater access to New York's public transportation system.
In consultation with disabled riders and advocacy groups take positions on pressing transit issues facing New York's Disability Community. We then advocate those positions through position papers, testimony, press releases and press conferences.
Finally, we serve as a resource to riders with disabilities.
Michael Harris is the founder of this coalition.
Southern Tier Independence Center The Southern Tier Independence Center (STIC) which serves Broome, Tioga and Chenango Counties, has received numerous complaints regarding a lack of and/or inadequate paratransit services. The major problems are: limited availability due to too few vehicles and understaffing; lack of service to a rural areas; and, finally, poor quality of service received (e.g. tardiness, unreliable scheduling, inclement weather cancellation policies, etc.) If you have any problems or questions, please call Jennifer Ayala at (607) 724-2111 or e-mail: Advocate@STIC-cil.org r A group holds more power than any individual.
United we CAN make a difference!
